Keeping the Tradition Alive….

The NSJP has become a force on the North Shore, offering both entertainment and educational opportunities to the community.

What We Do

The North Shore Jazz Project (NSJP) started in November of 2009 to help revive the North Shore of Boston as a jazz oasis. The project was inspired by Sandy Berman and Lennie Sogoloff, two men whose love of music and particularly Jazz and Blues brought people like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Howlin’ Wolf to the North Shore. The NSJP mission is to create a musical environment by bringing together the best performers and teachers with listeners and students of all abilities and backgrounds to create a musical environment where learning, experiencing, and the appreciation of music and it’s various forms can flourish. For nearly 60 years Mr. Sogoloff and Mr. Berman presented music where world-class artists performed to the inspiration of our community. It is in this spirit that the NSJP aims to create a non threatening environment where young and old can appreciate America’s only original art form. To that end we present public concerts, conduct educational workshops and maintain an ongoing video and audio archive of these events by means of interview with the performers and video of the workshops and concerts. These concerts bring together students, local musicians and world-class players and are held at multiple schools and venues throughout the North Shore.  Our educational programs bring together players and teachers from the Berklee School of Music and New England Conservatory to mentor local high-school students on the North Shore. The workshop covers instruction on technique, interpretation and performance. It is capped with a concert by the ensemble, open to the public. A more intimate clinic presents a music educator accompanied by a professional rhythm section. The work covers similar material from the workshops in an after school environment. Clinics are free of charge to all North shore student musicians.
